The Monster Under the Deck: Seasickness
We have all been there. You are excited about your diving trip, the sun is shining, but as soon as the boat leaves the marina, your stomach starts to turn. Seasickness (Mal de Mer) is the number one spoiler of boat trips, but the good news is: it is almost entirely preventable.
At Dive More Group, we want you to enjoy the fish, not the bathroom. Here is our captain’s guide to keeping your breakfast where it belongs.
1. The Night Before: Preparation is Key
Your battle against motion sickness starts 12 hours before the trip.
Avoid Alcohol: A hangover is the best friend of seasickness. Skip the heavy drinking the night before.
Sleep Well: Fatigue makes your inner ear more sensitive to balance changes. Get a solid 8 hours of sleep.
2. Medication: The "Magic Pills"
If you know you are sensitive, don't try to be a hero. Take medication.
Local Pharmacy: In Hurghada, you can find Dramenex or Stugeron. They are cheap and very effective.
Timing: This is crucial! You must take the pill one hour before getting on the boat. Taking it once you already feel sick is too late.
3. On the Boat: Location, Location, Location
Where you sit matters. A boat acts like a seesaw; the bow (front) and stern (back) move the most.
The Sweet Spot: Sit on the lower deck (closest to the water) and in the middle of the boat. This is the center of gravity where movement is minimal.
Fresh Air: Avoid staying inside the salon or smelling the engine fumes. Stay outside in the fresh breeze.
Look at the Horizon: Your eyes need a fixed reference point to help your brain understand the movement. Stare at the horizon line, not at your phone or a book.
4. Food & Drink: The Ginger Trick
Eat Light: Don't go on an empty stomach, but avoid greasy hotel buffets (sausages and eggs). Toast, cereal, or fruit are best.
Bananas & Ginger: These are natural antacids. Ginger tea (often available on our boats) settles the stomach instantly.
5. Get in the Water!
Ironically, the best cure is to jump in. Once you are underwater, the rocking motion stops. So, gear up quickly and get off the boat!
