PADI Open Water Diver Course in Hurghada: your first scuba certification
The PADI Open Water Diver is the first level of PADI scuba certification. In three days with us in Hurghada you learn the basic skills in confined water, then make four open water dives in the Red Sea with a PADI instructor. You study the theory yourself, online, before you arrive. At the end you are a certified diver who can dive with a buddy, without an instructor.

How the course works
- eLearning, before you arrive: you study the theory online at your own pace (PADI suggests about 5 to 10 hours), so your holiday is spent in the water. You will find the course on PADI's official Open Water Diver page.
- Confined water dives: with your instructor, in a pool or pool-like conditions, you learn the basic skills step by step.
- Four open water dives: you use those skills in the sea, usually over two days, and your instructor signs you off.

As a PADI Open Water Diver you can dive with a buddy, without an instructor, to 18 metres (60 feet), at dive sites around the world. Your certification does not expire.

Prerequisites:
To join the PADI Open Water Diver Course in Hurghada, you need:
- To be 10 years old or older. Under 18: a parent or guardian's approval (signature). Divers aged 10 to 14 earn the Junior Open Water Diver certification, which becomes the full certification at age 15, and follow extra PADI age and depth rules, explained in PADI's guide to diving restrictions by programme.
- To be able to swim and comfortable in the water. During the course your instructor asks you to float or tread water for 10 minutes and to swim 200 metres (or 300 metres with mask, fins and snorkel).
- Your PADI Open Water Diver eLearning, completed before the practical training

How your three days go
- Before you arrive: finish your PADI eLearning. Want a head start? Learn the scuba diving hand signals divers use underwater.
- Paperwork and equipment: the medical questionnaire, signatures and fitting your equipment
- Confined water dives: five dives with your instructor, where you learn and practise the basic skills
- Four open water dives: you repeat the skills in the sea and start exploring, usually over two days
- Certification: your instructor signs you off, your PADI Open Water Diver certification is processed and your digital card follows

After your four open water dives you become a PADI Open Water Diver, the first full scuba certification. It lets you dive with a buddy, independently of an instructor, to 18 metres (60 feet), and your certification does not expire. Divers aged 10 to 14 earn the Junior Open Water Diver certification, which automatically becomes the full certification at age 15.
