Can I Dive? Understanding the PADI Medical Questionnaire

The Paperwork Before the Plunge

You are ready to book your Open Water Course or a Discover Scuba Diving trip in Hurghada. You are excited, but then you see it: The Medical Statement. Suddenly, you are worried. "I have mild asthma," or "I had surgery five years ago." Does this mean you can't dive?

Relax. The PADI Medical Questionnaire isn't designed to stop you from diving; it is designed to keep you safe. Here is a simple guide to understanding the form and what to do if you have a medical condition.

What is the PADI Medical Form?

It is a screening tool used worldwide. It contains a list of Yes/No questions about your medical history. The goal is to identify pre-existing conditions that might be dangerous underwater due to pressure changes, such as lung issues, heart conditions, or ear problems.

The "Yes" vs. "No" Rules

  • If you answer NO to all questions: Great! You just sign the form and you are ready to jump in the water immediately. No doctor needed.

  • If you answer YES to any question: Don't panic. A "Yes" does not mean you are disqualified. It simply means you must visit a physician to get a "Fit to Dive" medical certificate before you start the course.

Common Conditions & Misconceptions

Here are the most common questions we get at Dive More Group:

  • Asthma: Active asthma triggered by cold or exercise can be dangerous. However, if it is well-controlled, many doctors may still clear you to dive.

  • Ear Problems: If you have trouble equalizing or frequent infections, a check-up is essential to prevent eardrum damage.

  • Recent Surgery: You usually need to be fully healed and cleared by your surgeon to ensure the wound can withstand pressure.

  • Pregnancy: This is the only absolute "No." For the safety of the baby, diving is strictly forbidden during pregnancy.

Why Honesty is Crucial

Please, never lie on the form. Diving physiology is unique. A condition that is harmless on land (like a small hole in the heart) can cause serious Decompression Sickness underwater. Also, providing false information invalidates your dive insurance.

Need a Doctor in Hurghada?

If you arrived in Egypt and realized you need a medical check, don't worry. Hurghada has excellent hyperbaric doctors who specialize in diving medicine. We can direct you to the nearest clinic for a quick check-up.
